RUMOR: Is “Sonic Mach2″ our next Sonic game?
Sonic the Hedgehog is SEGA’s mascot. The pivotal games in his franchise are developed by Sonic Team, and are traditionally released for consoles. Sonic Lost World, for the Wii U, was the last console title that Sonic Team helmed.
Sonic Runners is the newest Sonic game, and it was released on smartphones earlier this year. Runners was the subject of a “soft launch,” and is currently only available in Japan and Canada. Hardlight’s Sonic Dash, another smartphone game, just received a port for arcades, though, as of now, it’s exclusive to the United Kingdom.
Now, before we start talking about rumors, let’s clarify a few facts. First of all, Sonic Team is still developing games for consoles. We will get to run around as our favorite anthropomorphic mammal in a big-budget adventure at least one more time.
Next, SEGA can’t afford to host their own booth at E3 this year. Instead, they’re teaming up with some of their partners for the convention, so we’ll probably still see a few titles bear SEGA’s familiar blue logo. I’m not optimistic for any big announcements, considering SEGA’s statement.
“With the majority of our bigger titles launching later in 2015/2016, particularly those from our AAA studios Relic Entertainment, Sports Interactive and Creative Assembly, we are concentrating our efforts for some of these major announcements after our relocation. Instead, we will be collaborating with our various business partners for this year’s E3 show.”
Now, with that out-of-the-way, let’s drift on down to the most obscure parts of the internet.
Romanus Fuhrman is a German voice actor, and one of his many roles is Orbot. Orbot debuted in Sonic Unleashed, and he has since become a recurring character in the series.
Fuhrman’s website was recently discovered to have a listing for a “Sonic Mach2,” with him reprising his role as Orbot. As of this writing, the listing has been removed from his resume. Ergo, Mr. Fuhrman might have mentioned the game before he was supposed to.
In light of this mystery, a heroic soul boldly stared the devil in the eye to try and discover the truth. The hero messaged Sonic Team’s head, Takashi Iizuka, over Facebook.
Sonic Stadium’s Shadzter decided to follow-up. Unfortunately, Iizuka couldn’t respond with any additional details.
Something is afoot. If Iizuka’s “it’s not developed by us” is correct – remember, English isn’t his first language, and there’s only oh-so-much that Iizuka could say about an unannounced game – then this isn’t Sonic Team’s project.
So, what could this mysterious entity be? It’s possible that “Sonic Mach2″ could be a Sonic Boom-branded free-to-play smartphone game – I’ve been reliably informed that Orbot has appeared in the Sonic Boom cartoon.
It’s impossible to know what “Sonic Mach2″ is, as all we really have to go on is that Orbot will show up and say something. Whatever it is, I’m not too confident that it will appear at E3.
For now, Sonic fans will just have to wait a little longer. It is by no means a shocking reveal that a new Sonic game is being developed, but it’s nice to know we probably have at least one more game coming this year. Before I go, I’d like to randomly mention that I’d love a third Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing.
